چکیده

Two strains of heterotrophic, non-motile, Gram-negative extreme thermophiles have been isolated from hot tap water. These strains (NH and DI) have been characterized and compared with strains of genus Thermus. Few of the single organic compounds tested supported growth in the presence of ammonium salts, and, like Thermus strains, growth on undefined media was restricted to dilute tryptone-yeast extract-mineral salt solutions. Nutrients agar and similar common laboratory media did not support growth. The growth rate was similar to that of Thermus strains, as was the unusual pattern of antibiotic resistance. Mean base composition of NH was 61-4% guanine plus cytosine (G+C), and DI was 62-0 to 62-2% G+C, which are several per cent lower than the G+C contents of other strains so far described.

Global Association between Thermophilicity and Vancomycin Susceptibility in Bacteria

Exploration of the aquatic microbiota of several circum-neutral (6.0-8.5 pH) mid-temperature (55-85°C) springs revealed rich diversities of phylogenetic relatives of mesophilic bacteria, which surpassed the diversity of the truly-thermophilic taxa. To gain insight into the potentially-thermophilic adaptations of the phylogenetic relatives of Gram-negative mesophilic bacteria detected in culture...

Possible environmental sources of Acanthamoeba spp in contact lens wearers.

The water supply and dust samples from the home environment (bathrooms and kitchens) of 50 wearers of contact lenses (CLs) were cultured for the presence of free-living amoebae. CL cases, solutions, and water taps were cultured for bacteria, which amoebae require for growth. Acanthamoeba spp were isolated from water drawn from six bathroom cold water taps (tank supplied), five in the presence o...

Presence of thermophilic bacteria in laundry and domestic hot-water heaters.

Thermophilic bacteria resembling Thermus aquaticus were isolated from hot water taken from domestic and commercial hot-water tanks. Cold water from the same locations never yielded thermophilic bacteria, suggesting that the bacteria were growing in the tanks. In contrast to the T. aquaticus isolates from hot springs, the present isolates were rarely pigmented. In general, the hotter sources mor...

Antimicrobial activity of Cyanobacteria isolated from hot spring of Geno

Cyanobacteria, the blue green algae are one of the most diverse groups of Gram-negative photosynthetic prokaryotes widely distributed throughout the world. Cyanobacteria are known to produce a wide range of secondary metabolites with various biological actions. The aim of this study was to test extracts from various cyanobacteria isolated from Geno hot spring, Bandar Abbas (Iran) against a dive...

A Test for Airborne Dispersal of Thermophilic Bacteria from Hot Springs

Physical and chemical barriers separate individual terrestrial hot springs and their affiliated communities of thermophilic bacteria. However, 16S rRNA gene sequence comparisons suggest that seemingly identical or closely related bacterial species are found in multiple hot springs that are separated by distances that range from a few meters to thousands of kilometers. To investigate whether thi...
